8 x 10 chemical painting
United States of America
My work is a refined and calculated investigation into the scientific process of photo development. I utilize various mixtures of photo chemicals to create my paintings. These works are created in the time span it takes the chemicals to develop once exposed to the elements. Light, temperature and pressure are all contributing factors in the colors and shapes found in my pieces.
I use these works to showcase the continuous struggle for control in an ever changing and unpredictable environment that is best left alone and adapted to.
The pieces are each taken through three phases of existence.
The first phase, equipoise, is the original chemical painting on photo paper, (discovery/compromise).
During the second phase, ligmation, the original painting is enlarged and infused onto a sheet of metal, (metamorphosis).
In the final phase, blackligma, the image is manipulated into a bilaterally symmetrical mandala and presented large scale, (meditation).
