Myths were created by humans to tell stories about our nature; we also create personal myths to cope. I would like to explore this by presenting 2 juxtaposing works of music shortened/edited for a solo singer: selections from the opera “Dido & Aeneas” (Purcell, 1689) and the song cycle of love, loss and spiritual rebirth, “December Songs” (Yeston, 1991.) By presenting the passion, desire, and self-deception in loss through song, I will deeper examine the myths we create in the pursuit and loss of love. “Dido & Aeneas” is also based on an ancient myth (the Latin poem The Aeneid, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC.) It is my hope that by playing with the idea of myth (both as an ancient storytelling form, and the stories we tell ourselves) in these 2 works, I can turn the stories we tell ourselves to cope with heartbreak and despair into possibility.
